Incorporate diversity and inclusion training into orientation for new faculty and staff
Through new-hire orientations and web-based resources, Dartmouth will ensure that all members of the community are aware of opportunities for involvement in enhancing the diversity and inclusivity and have clear guidelines for reporting incidents of bias.
Diversity and inclusivity topics are already part of new-employee orientations -- representatives from the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity present at each session. But coverage is less than comprehensive and the existing program would benefit from reevaluation.
All new employee orientation sessions include an introduction to the work of the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity and Title IX, as well as information about Employee Resource Networks and Dartmouth's commitment to building an inclusive environment. However the proportion of the orientation that focuses on inclusion and diversity remains minimal given the other information that must also be presented at this time.
As of September 15, 2016, the Office of Human Resources has piloted two modules of a new-employee orientation with a renewed focus on inclusivity. Two more modules will be piloted by the end of September. Initial feedback on the first two pilots indicated that some reworking is needed, so this program is being revised before it is implemented for all new employees.
Update December 2018: Work continues on increasing the thematic content in new employee orientation that addresses diversity and inclusion.
